MONTGOMERY & BISHOP
BUILT 1956 Designed by Montgomery & Bishop, this house incorporates the ruins of a two-story schist stone barn (note the sills near the top of the wall) of a former Chestnut Hill estate into one wing of the L-plan, one-story, flat-roofed cinderblock building. The stucco-clad house is set back and rotated on its semi-wooded site. Robert Forsythe Bishop spent time with Frank Lloyd Wright at the Taliesin Fellowship and the influence is obvious here.
BUILT 1961 The house presents a long schist wall viewed as you enter the drive. This wall is deliberately set at an angle to the street in order to address the sloping site. In addition, it frames both the arrival court and entry spaces of the house. The use of schist ties the house visually to the local, older architecture. The hip-roof pavilion beyond recalls Bishop's training with Frank Lloyd Wright.
BUILT 1958 Designed by Montgomery & Bishop, this International Style house is the quintessential simple rectangle clad in vertical grey siding with white trim. Firmly grounded on a schist stone base and set below the road into the hillside in the front, it cantilevers in the back over a stream and opens through glass walls to the wooded lot beyond. A wide carport with paired columns projects out into the arrival court, focusing attention on the front entrance which is recessed between the two wings.
